Biography

Jonathan Freeman-Attwood is the 14th Principal of the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is also an award-winning recording producer, trumpet player, writer, editor and broadcaster. As a trumpet soloist, Freeman-Attwood has released thirteen solo albums, and they have attracted wide critical acclaim for their musical originality and effective re-imagining of the trumpet as a chamber instrument in reconstructions of works from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries. He has produced over 250 commercial discs for many of the world’s most prestigious labels and has won several major awards, including ‘Diapasons d’Or’, Gramophone and BBC Music Awards, and numerous nominations. Holding several senior posts at the Royal Academy over thirty years, Freeman- Attwood has played a leading role in launching pioneering programmes and fostering major international relationships. The latest is the Sir Elton John Global Exchange Programme (2022) with twelve major international conservatoires, alongside a 20- year collaboration with the Juilliard School in New York. He is a trustee of various charities including Garsington Opera, Countess of Munster Trust and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He was appointed CBE in the New Year’s Honours List of 2018.
