Biography

Originally from Amsterdam (NL), bass player Joris Teepe has been living in New York since 1992. Over the course of his career he has worked with many jazz legends such as Benny Golson, Barry Harris, Bobby Watson, Chris Potter, Billy Hart and Randy Brecker. His longest stint was with Rashied Ali (John Coltrane’s last drummer), with whom he recorded 4 albums and toured the world for almost a decade. One of Teepe’s latest projects is the Trio of Liberty with New York based saxophone player Don Braden, marking their 25th anniversary of musical cooperation. DownBeat Magazine selected their album Conversations as ‘Album of the Year 2017’. Other recent releases include In the Spirit of Rashied Ali, The Brooklyn Sessions and In the Spirit of Herbie Hancock (Live at De Witte). Teepe’s latest release is the album When Will the Blues Leave, recorded with legendary drummer John Engels and saxophone player Benjamin Herman. Teepe has been leading his own groups for over 25 years and has recorded 16 albums as a band leader. He has composed over 100 originals and leads his own Big Band in New York, performing exclusively his own music. Teepe has also established himself as a record producer and as a jazz educator at Queens College NY and as Director of the Jazz Department of the Groningen Conservatory (NL). In 2004 he was nominated for the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the category ‘Artist Deserving Wider Recognition’.
