Go west and you’ll find a land of melodious joy. The music there is bold and beautiful, the language round and ripe. But Wales is not as sunny as Brazil, despite its odd bouts of tywydd hufen iâ – that’s “ice cream weather” to you and to Carwyn Ellis. The man behind Colorama and more recently collaborations with Saint Etienne, Edwyn Collins and touring with the Pretenders & Chrissie Hynde has gone off-piste with his new album (his third in this guise), the glorious 'Yn Rio'. It takes us on a trip to Rio de Janeiro with his multinational band, Rio 18 along with the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales. The words are in Welsh. The music is South American in flavour. In Rio 18 alone, there are Brazilian, American, Venezuelan, English and of course, Welsh members. The album is mixed by a French man. It is mastered by an Italian. The record label is German. These are songs of hope, history and harmony, recorded in exceptionally challenging circumstances but in a spirit of international brother- and sisterhood, showing just what we can achieve if we dream, work and play… together.
