arochicanos was formed in 2008 as a youth workshop with the desire to learn the musical tradition called Son Jarocho. Jarochicanos uses the music as a tool to create community based projects such as Talleres en la 18: free weekly jarana workshops, Jarana All Stars: free jarana workshops for children, and Tiendita de la 18: a small pop-up shop of handmade creations by Jarochicanos and other community groups. Jarochicanos also participates in Son Chiquitos: an early childhood Spanish immersion music program and Son y Arte: a Spanish immersion youth summer camp as organizers, instructors and musicians. They also bring the music to local marches, protests, fundraisers and events as a form of support and spirit-lifting. The community based projects of Jarochicanos are a direct response to the uprooting of our communities’ cultural and historical knowledge. Jarochicanos strives to create spaces in our urban, American setting where these past ways of life and historical funds of knowledge can be shared, practiced, and remembered, for they have what we believe is the key to transforming our communities.
