Musical maverick Mark de Clive-Lowe seems an enigma at first sight - juggling piano, synths, live sampling and beat making all on-the-fly, brought to life with a casual ease that's mind-boggling. In his formative London years, the Japanese-New Zealander was at the epicenter of the burgeoning broken beat movement, establishing himself as an undeniable voice in progressive electronic music. Since 2008, MdCL has called Los Angeles home where he's been a vital member of LA's beat-jazz evolution. Equal parts composer, jazz musician, found-sound live remixer and electronic producer, MdCL's sets are a treat for the listeners, the dancers, the progressives and the purists alike - as he casually erases the lines between genres and eras. Whether he's remixing classic Blue Note Records in real time, on stage joined by the likes of Kamasi Washington, Sy Smith or Eric Harland, improvising solo piano or creating live soundtracks to classic film material, MdCL is an artist in constant evolution, reaching for that next destination. The critically-acclaimed album CHURCH sees MdCL mash up his two loves - the jazz club and dancefloor; HERITAGE is his ode to his Japanese roots, ancestry and culture; FREEDOM pays homage to the late, great, master-teacher Pharoah Sanders; HOTEL SAN CLAUDIO explores a new soulful beat-jazz trio in collaboration with Shigeto and Melanie Charles.
