b. 29 August 1944, Dundee, Scotland, into a family of singers who provided her with many of the songs and ballads she is known for singing today. Wellington made her first appearance at the age of two, singing ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ in a competition. During the 50s and 60s the folk revival introduced Wellington to the singing of Jeannie Robertson, and Belle Stewart. Later, joining the Wrens, and marrying a sailor, along with family commitments, meant that she was out of the folk scene for some time. Upon her husband’s retirement from the Navy they bought a guest house in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland, and she became resident singer at the St. Andrews Folk Club. In addition to singing, for several years she presented a weekly folk programme for Radio Tay, as well as receiving airplay in her own right. Wellington has appeared at many of the major folk festivals and clubs in Scotland, and toured extensively in the USA and Canada. In 1993 she appeared at the British Council’s Festival of Celtic Music, in Barcelona. Her recorded works, on Dougie MacLean’s Dunkeld label, encompass her own compositions alongside traditional material. Wellington is the National Convenor of the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland (TMSA). In this role she has campaigned for the cause of the recognition, status, and funding of Scottish traditional arts. In 1991 she became the first traditional musician to be appointed to the Music Committee of the Scottish Arts Council, and, in 1993, she was invited to join the Executive Committee of the Advisory Council for the Arts in Scotland.
