When the Birds Upraise Their Choir

Eudaimonia

Biography

Été Large was founded in 2015 by saxophonist Luise Volkmann. She named her 13-piece band "Été Large," which means "big summer" or "it was great." Inspired by some excursions into the world of classical music, Volkmann decided on a hybrid instrumentation between a typical brass band and some classical elements. What started in the subcultural space of Leipzig and Berlin became an international ensemble with the first album "Eudaimonia". Released November 2017, the album was voted one of the best albums of the year by the journal "Die Zeit". The radio station BR Klassik described Volkmann's compositional style as chamber jazz. The second album "When the birds upraise their choir" released in 2020, is about the '68 movement and the sense of rock music in connection to social movements. The album was again voted one of the best CDs of the year by the "Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland". The band played on international festivals in Germany, Czech Republic and France. Their concert at the MOERS Festival was also broadcast on ARTE Concert.
