Xolani Thabani Mchunu, better known as Xenlaii, is an independent South African creative artist. He specialises in music and art, identifying himself as a musician and visual artist. From a small town outside of Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal, he developed his sound; which he calls “Surf Rap”. Explaining the sound as a blend of Soul, Rap, Dance Music, and Kwaito, he takes sonic queues from the likes of AKA, TKZEE and Sjava. Granted while this could easily be explained as “Fusion”, referring to his sound as “Surf Rap grounded his musicality in the soundscapes he grew up with, the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline.
