Biography

'This one’s for the basement dwellers. For the leg-shakers too. Running on from the opulent production of last year’s Ignorant Poetry; and the conception of independent label Basement Flat Records, LaurLess and the Basement Flat army return in full-fledged force with their strongest cumulative effort to date. LaurLess’ tales of slacker tribulations meander with effortless flow, speaking narratives of under the influence public transportation or schoolhouse underachievement over sample heavy alternative hip-hop beats. Eclecticism reigns on the production of 465MB. ‘WHot, WHY_’ wraps ears in a clouded groove, driven by a Link Wray-esque tremolo strum, while ‘Silver Lining’ bases itself in trap sensibility. This is an album that never rests dormant stylistically, each track switching on the style of the previous and commanding listeners attention. A slew of feature verses from usual suspects Owlface, Ohhwot and Caiman is testament to the organic nature of these LaurLess and Basement Flat projects, a true product of the underground. Something more than simply a collective, you can tell that the work these guys do is founded in a greater creative process where production and songwriting reflect the shared vision, a sentiment that has been integral to all facets of the labels work. It’s moody. It’s funny. It’s lyrical. Brighton hip-hop living up to its reputation.'
