Founded by Mark Dourish in 2011, De Profundis sings and records continental Renaissance polyphony in an 'historically informed' way, with adult male singers performing at lower pitch, as the composers would have expected. Hailed as “ace” by The Guardian, the group performs with many of the world’s leading early music conductors. Between 2014 and 2020 De Profundis released three albums of Spanish Renaissance sacred music on the Hyperion label - music by Ribera, Vivanco, and Esquivel - winning plaudits in Gramophone magazine, on BBC Radio 3’s Record Review, and in the UK and Spanish press. Their recording of music by Sebastián de Vivanco, conducted by Robert Hollingworth, was one of the Discs of the Year in El País. In 2022 the choir launched their landmark ‘Morales Project’ to perform and record the complete masses and Magnificats of Cristóbal de Morales, the founding father of the Spanish Renaissance school. The first album in the series was released in March 2023 and was awarded a Diapason d’Or. The second album (Requiem for five voices and Officium defunctorum) is due for release in 2024.
