Homegrown rapper and producer bp relates comfortably with the outliers of alternative hip-hop. Hailing from Walyalup, Western Australia, bp’s expansive discography boasts introspective lyrics, tight wordplay and oddball instrumentation. bp’s 2017 debut, Freak EP, served as a meditation on peer pressure and teenage angst. This was followed the same year by 12 Days of Christmas, a collaborative and comedically festive project whose twelve tracks were initially released once per day leading up to Christmas Eve. bp’s first solo full-length project, aleXis, was released in 2021 and is an hour-long, narrative-based examination of “ego, priorities, self-acceptance and everything in between”. The concise solo project Stiffy! (2022) blends self-deprecating humour and wildly experimental production to present a candid expression of mental health and its instabilities throughout. bp’s newest and most focussed album 27/7 blends sub-genres of jazz-rap, old-school hip-hop, experimental trap and industrial house. The collage of tracks are held down with introspective and philosophically vivid lyricism that initially reads like free-flowing thoughts, although with the confidence and bravado to show that bp is really rapping his ass off. The album is slated for a July 2023 release and showcases many featured collaborators including underground hip-hop veteran Quelle Chris, alongside local peers Lachie Simpson, Ju$, Cyzz, and more.
