Hailed by critics as, "evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization," Schneider's music has garnered twelve Grammy nominations and five Grammy awards in varied genres: in jazz (with her acclaimed Maria Schneider Orchestra), in classical (for "Winter Morning Walks" with Dawn Upshaw), and with David Bowie, "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" from "Nothing Has Changed. Unique funding of projects has become a hallmark for Schneider through the trend-setting company, ArtistShare. All of her albums continue to be sold through ArtistShare and www.mariaschneider.com. "Concert in the Garden" (2004), the first recording to win a Grammy with internet-only sales, blazed the "crowd-funding" trail as ArtistShare's first release, and was inducted in the the National Recording Registry in 2020. Schneider was awarded America's highest distinction in jazz, NEA Jazz Master, in 2019, and was elected into the 2020 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A staunch advocate for musicians and creators rights, she testified before the congressional subcommittee on intellectual property in 2014.
