Biography

Tempesta di Mare, the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra, has performed over 300 concerts of carefully crafted programs of 17th- and 18th-century music by over 70 composers. Led by directors Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone with concertmaster Emlyn Ngai, Tempesta performs all orchestral music without conductor, as was the practice when the music was new. Our commitment to innovative programming has resulted in the performance on our series of over 35 modern world premieres of lost or forgotten baroque masterpieces. We seek to enlighten our audiences with contexts—the political, philosophical, literary and technological stories—that surrounded the music at the time of its creation and make a connection to its relevance to today’s world. In a marketplace dominated by European ensembles, Tempesta is the only American baroque music group to record for the prestigious British label Chandos. Our current catalogue includes twelve critically acclaimed CDs, including first recordings. Recordings of our live performances and recordings are heard by more than 60 million annual listeners nationally, with millions more in 56 countries worldwide. Find out more: www.tempestadimare.org
