Choonkie Malete, a writer, singer & musician., started singing at a young age, as a member of various groups. By her early teens, she had begun writing, arranging songs & vocals & continues to be relied upon to do so for artists she works with. Her eclectic music taste lends itself heavily to the diverse, versatile nature of her own music. She considers herself a ‘Provocative Storyteller’, saying “The story shouldn’t be told by the lyrics alone. The beat, the vocal texture, should talk to you. Every aspect of the song should MAKE you feel what the lyrics are talking about.” Combining her love for creative writing & music, she worked with Stones Moyo, to create a six track EP, titled C.J. Of the EP, she says “C.J.is a collection of 6 stories inspired by life experiences, told musically, in various shades of emotion, through a mix of different feels & genres, from my perspective, the jungle of my mind. We let the theme of the EP, 'Choonkie's Jungle' (C.J.), the idea of 'Choonkie's thoughts’, be the main thread that ran through & made the project cohesive. We were in an environment where we were free to experiment, to put an 808 & violins over an African Drum, to belt one moment & croon the next & make it all sound good. It was awesome." Besides the EP, she has worked with other artists, such as Skaiva, & Dee Moses, as a featuring artist, backing vocalist, & creative director. With a second project already in the works, we are eager to see what else she has to offer the world.
