Biography

World premieres, improvisations, recitals, concertos, chamber music... multi-talented musician Orlando Bass is a French-British pianist-harpsichordist-composer-improviser. More than a performer with exceptional fingers and sensitivity: he is also a musician who thinks deeply, expresses himself with humour and charts his course with an apparent serenity tinged with greed. He regularly performs an extensive part of the classical repertoire, and feels the need to explore forgotten masterpieces, by famous and unknown composers alike. This has led him to adore the explosion of musical expressions, languages, aesthetics in the earlier part of the 20th century. A keen interpreter of contemporary music and a staunch supporter for new music, he has given numerous first performances of solo and ensemble works. Orlando attended the CNSM in Paris, where he studied with Roger Muraro, Itamar Golan, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger and Thierry Escaich. A disc of Preludes and Fugues for solo piano, spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, was released in 2018 by Indésens, and a solo double disc featuring both his own compositions and some by Olivier Penard was published by Dux in 2021. Other discs are published by Odradek, Paladino media, Triton, Hortus, Maguelone and Paraty. Orlando Bass is a laureate of the Fondation Banque Populaire, both as a performer and composer, and winner of Olivier Messiaen International Competition (2023).
