Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Ronimus emerges with a new Dancehall sound fused with a gritty New York feel. In his upcoming debut EP, Ronimus I, he blends Patois and Dancehall grooves together with pounding Hip Hop beats and lush saxophone lines. “I’m not trying to fit in” says Ronimus, “Just being the best me, if you like it, nice. If you don’t, still nice.” Ronimus began recording his first songs at the age of 16, after immigrating to the US. He was soon forced to stop by his parents due to the explicit lyrical content. In turn, his Church gifted him a saxophone and, inspired by the sound of Jerry Weimer, Ronimus began mastering his new instrument. This would bring him to start a reggae band, Heights of Wisdom, which culminated in the project Generation Y. He also played as a session musician on various occasions, eventually becoming the saxophonist for Ibn Itaka’s band, playing side by side with respected jazz musicians. Inspired by the New York jazz and Hip-Hop scene he was inserting himself in, Ronimus picked up songwriting again in 2019. With the help of his friend and producer Bittaz, Ronimus began uncovering a sound that was “simple yet complex in melody, like Jackie Mittoo,” inflecting it with his personal touch of “saxophone and swag.” When asked about his life in NYC, Ronimus replied “I will eventually go back home for sure but I love New York… it reminds of Ja[maica] in regards to tuff love, but not even close to Ja[maica]’s beauty.”
