Franui are best known for their adaptations of lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler. The ensemble regard themselves as a “transformer station between classical music, folk music, jazz and contemporary chamber music;” sometimes the original is celebrated, sometimes it is turned upside down, stripped down to its bare bones, enhanced, painted over, elaborated, in a process that blurs the boundaries between interpretation and improvisation, between arrangement and (re)composition. Franui are frequently invited to perform at major international festivals and venues (e. g. Klarafestival Brussels, Holland Festival, Wiener Burgtheater, Salzburger Festspiele, Philharmonie Köln, Ruhrtriennale, Münchner Opernfestspiele, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg). Since 2015 they are joint-organiser of the annual festival “Gemischter Satz” hosted by Konzerthaus Vienna, which presents new forms of interaction between music, art, literature and wine. The Musicbanda often collaborates with other exceptional performers, including the baritone Florian Boesch, the author Hans Magnus Enzensberger, the director, puppeteer and whistler Nikolaus Habjan as well as the actors Dörte Lyssewski, Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Peter Simonischek. Franui’s albums are released with the label col legno and have won several prizes.
