Upland (aka Knut Andreas Ruud) started out more or less aligned with the early 2000's IDM scene, and gradually evolved over the course of his first three albums, released on Ulver front man Kristoffer Rygg's eclectic Jester Records label. By the time third album Monochrome Adventures was released in 2009, IDM was all but gone from the equation, replaced with traces of metal, breakbeat and musique concrète. Later endeavours saw Upland investigating the edges between drum & bass and his own blend of intricate beat programming and sound design (2014's Unlanded), while most recently he's been revisiting his formative years in and around the demo scene and early gaming culture with Raster Dreams (2019) and Raster Coma (2020). These explorations culminated with the 2023 release of Raster Euchronia, whose title refers to the active and reconstructive nature of human memory, likened to the dynamic display of raster images on a CRT monitor: Much like the raw pixel values of a raster image gain depth and vibrancy when projected onto a monitor screen, each memory we retrieve is not a passive replay but an active reconstruction, enriched and reshaped through our present mindset. Over time, these cherished recollections are cast in an increasingly idealized light, akin to the unique glow of a CRT display. They begin to embody the notion of 'Euchronia'; a golden age or time of perfect harmony.
