Los Angeles art-pop producer ELPENTHE rewires electronic dance music into an organically charged network on the debut EP, Elpenthe I. Derived from the ancient Greek nepenthe, a potion used by the gods to chase away sorrow, the five tracks move listeners to an ecstatic space created within a series of hypnotic synths and propulsive beats. Along the way, ELPENTHE found a love for environmentalism, earned a master’s degree in environmental engineering, researched a system using plants to clean up oil spills, and fused his passions into a solar-powered bike tour with one of his bands. At the EP’s core is a desire to construct a communal spirit through shimmering instrumentals draped over a timeless chorus. Wild Rivers vocalist Devan Glover and ELPENTHE, aka producer Elliott Beenk, worked remotely between Toronto and LA on the debut single Already Know, released on Earth Day, a rising anthem that emerges from a deeply unapologetic sadness. ELPENTHE tapped Ben Darwish (Shawn Mendes, BANKS) for keys on Mistakes. TK Kayembe (Lizzo, Kehlani) provided additional production on What We Got Away With. 2022 Grammy-nominated Kevin Smith (Harry Styles, Frank Ocean) mixed the songs, and Stuart Hawkes (Lorde, Disclosure) mastered the EP. Through its inspired lyricism and mesmerizing production, Elpenthe I is an experience grounded in a deep love of connections that actively chases away today’s worries, with a musical release that can be played on repeat long after today’s tomorrow.
