Four years in the making Kane's new album Book of Broken Things (out on 5th March) features guests including "Ed Harcourt, "Fiona Brice, Liam McKahey, "Steve Jansen, "Boz Boorer, "Emma Pollock, "Sharlene Hector, Suzanne Barbieri and "Johnnie Fiori. Philip Kane and his band The Expendables formed in 1998. Praise for the first album Songs for Swinging Lovers includes: 'There's nothing cheap about his novelistic range and ambition' 'blessed with a magnetic white soul voice'. Hip Hop Connection The follow up Time:Gentlemen was reviewed in Uncut, referencing its 'shimmering Walkers whirlpools', and noting that Kane brought 'the voice of Al Green to the mindset of Nick Cave'. Again, Dagbladet exalted it: 'a classic.' A thirteen year retirement was broken by Flowers and Ledges in 2016. It found praise in Mojo, which made reference to Kane's 'aching tender tones' and 'ability to find romance in the dirt'. Prog magazine's art rock album of the month, it was described as 'a grandstanding gallery of literate, heartfelt testifying', feat.
