Kora has long been recognised as the best live act in New Zealand, with an enduring career and legacy that resonates across the generations. In the early 90s, Laughton, Francis, Stuart, and Brad, four brothers of the Kora family hailing from Whakatane, began catching the attention of local audiences. In 2000 while living in Queenstown, Laughton began jamming with local musician Dan McGruer (aka Syrup D) and following on the success of Politician at radio Kora released their Volume EP in mid-2004, and it proved hugely popular, reaching Platinum sales status. Their debut LP, which immediately went to No.1 in New Zealand, reached double-platinum status. The follow-up, “Light Years”, came five years later and showcased the band's diverse musical range, and was one of the highest-selling albums of 2013. By 2019, Kora’s live efforts were focused around a new ensemble, consisting of core members Fran Kora, Stu Kora (L.A.B.), Dan McGruer (Syrup D), Richie Allan (Heavy Metal Ninjas), with new additions Darren Mathiassen (Shapeshifter) on drums, Marika Hodgson (Hollie Smith) on bass, and Karlos Tunks on rhythm guitar and BVs. A regular output of new works, tested in the live arena, has been released since, cementing KORA as a classic and timeless artist in the music scene of Aotearoa New Zealand.
