The set feels organic and sophisticated, the compositions refined, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have fun along the way. “Junk Love is basically LYMA and I going nuts in the studio,” says Helbers, “exploring jazz chords and moving around different song structures. We just hooked up the SSL desk and jammed for days, recording everything analogue – drums, synths, synth bass.” The keys tinkle, fizz, phase and vibrate through tracks such as ‘Future Boogie’, LYMA lamenting the monotony of monogamy and conceding that comfort could be a click away. "You can find love on the internet,” he sings. “It can feel good when you’re in the web." His tone is rich and intimate, on similar register to Jordan Rakei or Dallas Tamaira from Fat Freddy’s Drop. He also possesses an impressive falsetto as we hear on standout track ‘Other Side’, which features a verse by Omar Ray. On ‘Smoke Machine’, Junk Love is the sound of two lovelorn musicians breaking free, bouncing off each other for your pleasure. You can hear echoes of anyone from Thundercat and the melodious bump of Chicago’s Smino, to Shigeto, Dego and Kaidi. But this release has its own aesthetic, seducing listeners into its orbit. As Lammers, says, “It’s for anyone willing to dive into the deep with us.”
