Russian artist Ivan Karasev produces grim, industrial-leaning drum'n'bass under the name Torn. Representing the "grey area" fusion of dark drum'n'bass and cold, punishing techno, his refined yet experimental releases include the 2022 full-length Borderline. Born in 1987, Karasev officially launched the Torn project in 2014. Apart from compilation tracks, his first vinyl release, Grethen EP, appeared on Shiro in 2017. Samurai Music released Internal in 2018, and other EPs followed on Horo and Weaponry (run by kindred spirit and collaborator Homemade Weapons). Karasev additionally worked with Sam KDC and Presha as the experimental techno trio Vermisst. Two self-released 2020 full-lengths, Aphelion and Distorted, respectively focused on grey area and drum'n'bass, and were followed by the techno EP Pangea and the more experimental G. Fatum EP, a collaboration with Roho, appeared in 2021. The EP Borderline: Approaching preceded the full-length Borderline, issued by Samurai Music in early 2022.
