There is no clear way to describe a genre Maliyah’s sound fits into. At its core, this Boston-based artist's music is heavily influenced by Alternative R&B, yet each record puts forth a new unexplored sonic landscape. Growing up in North Carolina, she was exposed to a myriad of musical influences from bluegrass to choir, jazz to metal. Her most recent EP, “FLORIDA WATER” pays homage to her emo/punk-pop/rock influence from her early teen years. Even so, many tracks from the EP weave Arabian-influenced melodies and instruments along with operatic vocals, an amalgamation of experiences and inspiration throughout her life. Maliyah hopes to always keep an experimental outlook when creating, never confining herself to a single genre but maintaining a sound that is distinctive to her artistry. She aims to transmute her most complex emotions into the highest form of healing, therapy, and connection with others.
