It is a well-known fact that Swedish electronic music holds a prominent position. However, when it comes to melodic synth-pop, the number of enjoyable contemporary releases are severly limited. In this context, the Umeå-based duo Unroyal is a welcome and inspiring exception. Their four-song debut EP is filled with well-crafted and nuanced melodies, combining synthesized harmonies with an unmistakably and melancholy indie pop sentiment. All in all, it's a prime example of refined new romantics-pop, party circling around vintage 82-ish drum beats, albeit impregnated with a feel of urgency. Similarities with New Order, Depeche Mode (and other beloved usual suspects) aside: Unroyal has distinctive artistic qualities, shining through.
