Copenhagen Phil traces its roots back to 1843 to the opening of the Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen. In the beginning the orchestra was primarily active during the summer season, but in 1965 the financial base was established for activities around the year – in the summer as "Tivoli Copenhagen Phil" and during the winter season as "Copenhagen Phil". By virtue of playing around 100 concerts, opera- and ballet-performances per year, Copenhagen Phil is one of the busiest, as well as the most versatile, orchestras in Denmark. Furthermore, educational outreach activities in schools are an integral part of the activities, and in the Copenhagen Phil Business program the orchestra offers customized events for companies. In 2011 the orchestra introduced "60 minutes" concerts which collaborates with artists from other musical genres. Two of the worlds most successful flash mob's are created by Copenhagen Phil: Ravel’s Bolero at Copenhagen Central Station and Grieg’s Morning Mood in the Copenhagen Metro. These videos have generated millions of views on YouTube and have made it to headlines all over the world – from CNN to Huffington Post and NHK Japan. From the 2016-17 season the Japanese conductor, Toshiyuki Kamioka, joined the orchestra as chief conductor, a position which until then had been held by Chinese Lan Shui since 2007. With Lan Shui the orchestra has recorded the complete Beethoven Symphonies which has been very well received by audience and critics alike.
