Biography

Ffrench first achieved notoriety when he performed ‘In My Heart There Is A Song’ at the 1984 Jamaican Song Festival. In the same year he performed at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in Jarret Park, Montego Bay, where he wooed the crowds with his interpretation of the popular dance craze ‘Shoulder Move’. His recording career gained momentum when he performed alongside the frequently extolled DJ Clement Irie for the hit ‘Bun And Cheese’. The song proved internationally successful, leading to a one-rhythm album of the same name. Ffrench continued to record throughout the 90s, including a cover version of the R&B hit ‘Earth Angel’, ‘Too Young’ and ‘Modern Girl’. Throughout the late 80s he endorsed his reputation as a writer and arranger with artists, including Johnny P for the popular ‘Stamina’, Clement Irie with ‘Stop It’ as well as Pliers and Henkel Irie. Following on from the success of his 1994 hit, ‘More Love’, with rapper Heavy D, the duo signed with Doctor Dread’s Washington-based RAS label for a one-album contract. By the end of 1995, Ffrench performed with Junior Reid on the highly acclaimed One Blood tour of the USA alongside Big Youth. A year later, inspired by his earlier celebrated collaboration, he teamed up with another rapper, Grand Puba, who had recorded with Shaggy, and Jeff Redd for the R&B-styled ‘Cry No More’.
