An African nomad, Floyd Lavine mines inspiration wherever he goes. Dubbed Afrofuturistic techno funk, his sound has grown from his roots in South Africa and been soldered via stints in London and his adopted hometown of Berlin. This unique sonic signature has been supported by RA, BBC Radio 6 Music, Vogue Italia, The Wire and staple dance press including Mixmag and DJ Mag. In 2019 he received a DJ Award nomination in the ‘Afro House’ category. Moving to Berlin in 2016, he co-founded RISE, a collective that was instrumental in establishing an Afro House scene in the city, staging events at Watergate and across Europe. Floyd’s played everywhere from CTM Festival, Panorama Bar, Pop-Kultur Festival and Black Coffee’s Ibiza residency. Production highlights include a remix of Coldcut & Tony Allen (the late great drummer from Fela Kutti) and a re-work of Kerri Chandler’s ‘Think of Something’, among many other releases. In 2022, Floyd’s focus is firmly on Afrikan Tales, his fledgling label project aimed at exploring African creativity and storytelling, focusing on bespoke music and showcasing artists from the African continent and others around the world who are inspired by the rich African culture. Outside of DJing and production, Floyd continues his residency on Refuge Worldwide, Berlin’s beloved community radio project.
