Biography

Baltic Crossing is a five-piece band made up of award-winning traditional musicians from the UK, Finland and Denmark - Ian Stephenson, Andy May, Esko Järvelä, Antti Järvelä and Kristian Bugge. Wherever they meet, at least one member must cross the Baltic Sea!! With fiery Scandinavian fiddles, bubbling Northumbrian pipes and a driving guitar and double bass rhythm section, their blend of lively modern folk with a Scandinavian/Celtic feel, dynamic stage presence and funny anecdotes promises a foot-stomping and fun night out. The inception of the band came about following a chance meeting between Ian and Kristian on a bus on the way to a folk music conference in Finland. The first gig took place in January 2004 in Newcastle, UK. This was followed by a trip to Denmark to record for Kristian's 'solo' album - Kristian Bugge Radium Prisen 2004 (2023 Remastered Version), part of his prize for the Radium award from the Danish Radio. In 2008 the band recorded their first band album, released on the Go Danish Folk Music label. Since then the band has gone on to perform in over 20 countries worldwide.  Further recognition folowed when Baltic Crossing became the first folk act nominated for the prestigious ECHO concert series, a scheme organised by leading concert halls around Europe to showcase up-and-coming performers.
