Biography

Just as Sons Of Anarchy brought the Forest Rangers to life, Los Refugios Tiernos are the product of the FX series, MayansM.C. Bob Thiele, who wrote and produced the music for both series, notes that Los Refugios Tiernos has a different identity: “We belong to the Mayans.” The main title theme song “Nunca,” a song about the Mexican immigrant’s lot, is sung by Los Lobos' David Hidalgo. Thiele says, “'Nunca' defines the band much as 'This Life' was the calling card of Sons Of Anarchy.” The new band – whose name translates as “The Tender Shelters,” employs some members of the Forest Rangers, including guitarist Val McCallum, bassist Davey Faragher, and drummer Michael Urbano. But crucial new players reflect the tone of the show. Ozomotli's Asdru Sierra and Bob collaborated on the series-opening number “En Mi Camino.” A re-imagined version of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane” features Xocoyotzin Moraza, a Veracruz harpist, David Hidalgo, and his son Vincent on guitarron. We were trying to get the vibe of an East LA mariachi group. Thiele found the ideal vocalist for “Sweet Jane” in Mexican-born, SF-based Diana Gameros. She also wrote and performed her own Spanish translation of Bacharach/David classic “I Say a Little Prayer” for the show. Thiele says of the band’s eclectic sound, “Much like Sons, we’re flying all over the map. But that gives us the sort of freedom that we will bring to Mayans."
