Belgian guitarist Sam Desmet earned a reputation in the late 2000s for performing and recording a mix of works from well-established composers with lesser-known or contemporary repertoire by composers such as Philip Glass, Richard Charlton, Eduardo Martín, and Javier Contreras. Desmet often branches out by collaborating with several artists and art forms such as dance, painting, architecture, animation, film, and poetry. Having begun his music education as a teenager in the small town where he grew up, his real connection with classical music began at the Royal Conservatory at Ghent under the guidance of his mentor, Yves Storms. After working with composers such as Leo Brouwer, Angelo Gilardino, and Simone Iannarelli, Desmet recorded a series of their studies on the album Study < > Study. A year later Desmet moved to the US continuing to explore the classical repertoire. Since then, he worked and performed in Asia, Europe, and throughout the US. He developed a deep fascination for chamber music in recent years, collaborating with distinguished artists such as Pablo Briceño and composer/guitarist Federico Bonacossa showcasing the versatility and artistry of the classical guitar to wider audiences. In addition to performing and recording, Desmet often releases arrangements and critical editions of music scores available on his website or through international publishers such as Production d’Oz and Edizioni Berben / Curzi.
