Pixis & Thalberg: Piano Concertos (Hyp...

Biography

This German pianist and composer was able to study with Albrechtsberger when his family moved to Vienna in 1806. While there he met Beethoven, Meyerbeer, and Schubert. Pixis was famous as both a piano teacher and as a virtuoso performer. Compositions that he scored were primarily for the keyboard in a bright but derivative style. His music shows definite resources in Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven and unfortunately most of his works lacked depth. "Les trois clochettes" was Pixis' most performed work for piano. In 1823 Pixis moved to Paris where he met Cherubini, Heine, Moscheles, Liszt, Halevy, Berlioz, and Rossini. Pixis contributed to "Hexameron" which were variations on a march from Bellini's "I Puritani" by six different composers. Other collaborators included Chopin, Liszt, Czerny, Thalberg and Herz. In 1840 Pixis moved to Baden-Baden where he remained for the rest of his life giving instruction in piano. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
