Biography

The Huelgas Ensemble, founded in 1971 by its artistic director Paul Van Nevel, is one of the most renowned ensembles for the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. For almost 50 years, Paul Van Nevel and his ensemble have been presenting repertoire from this European musical heritage to a worldwide audience. The ensemble is particularly well known for its innovative programming of unknown masterpieces, delighting audiences again and again with its fresh perspectives and the purest intonation. The Huelgas Ensemble has performed in all the major music centres and festivals, including the Lincoln Center, Cité de la Musique, Berliner Philharmonie, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, BBC Proms, Warsaw Philharmonic, BOZAR/Brussels, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht and Laus Polyphoniae. The ensemble’s award winning discography includes more than 100 recordings of vocal and instrumental works from the 12th to the 17th century. Paul Van Nevel is well known as a conductor, cultural historian and authority on early notation practice and interpretation. His deep knowledge of European music libraries enables him to continually perform unknown works with his ensemble, devising innovative programmes with original perspectives, thereby displaying his phenomenal knowledge of polyphonic repertoire. Paul Van Nevel’s publications include works on Ciconia, Gombert, the city of Lisbon and ‘The landscape of the polyphonists’. His extensive discography has earned him numerous awards.
