Shunya - aka Alan Keary - is a multi-talented musician and producer based in Manchester. Originally from Limerick he draws heavily on his Irish heritage to create music full of wonder and magic. His sound has been forged by a melting pot of influences, his background in classical violin and jazz bass melding with the futuristic sounds of the electronic music scene in Manchester. Shunya’s music, playful and ethereal, showcases his ability to slip seamlessly between styles and genres, balancing on the line between recklessness and precision. Described by critics as an ‘enigmatic’ and a ‘new discovery’, he is an internationally touring artist and collaborator who has worked with some of the most exciting talents in music- including South African cellist Abel Selaocoe, Sidiki Dembele, Manchester Collective, Jason Singh, Werkha, Simo Lagnawi and Josephine Oniyama. In 2021, he was commissioned to arrange music for orchestra for Abel’s debut BBC Prom “Africa meets Europe”, which he also performed in, at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that was met with universal praise. The same year, he provided a remix for acclaimed jazz trio Go Go Penguin’s GGP/RMX album. Despite featuring on the project alongside electronic heavyweights such as Squarepusher, Clark and 808 State, Shunya’s reworking of To The Nth was described as ‘almost stealing the record’.
