Biography

GISLE KVERNDOKK (b. 1967) is a Norwegian composer. He is mainly known for his work as a composer of operas and musicals. But he also writes a wide range of music, from chamber music, songs, church music, vocal music and music for dance, theatre and film. Gisle's operas "The Fourth Watch of the Night" (2005) and "Around the World in 80 Days" (2010) are successful productions at The Norwegian National Opera. The opera "Easter" was produced by Opera Sør and toured Norway in 2014. His musicals, among them "Sophie's World" (1998), "Homeless" Frendelaus - Musikalen (Frå originaloppsetjinga på Det Norske Teatret) (2003) and "Martin L." (2008) have been performed extensively in Norway and Germany. The musical "Around the world in 80 days" had its world premiere at the Landestheater Linz, Austria, in October 2016 and won the Best Musical Award at Deutsche Musical Theater Preis. His opera "Upon This Handful of Earth" was premiered by New York Opera Society at The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City in February 2017. The release Gisle Kverndokk: Fuge Der Zeit with music written for and performed by the vocal ensemble Nordic Voices has received great reviews and was nominated for a Spellemann Award (Norwegian version of Grammy). Gisle Kverndokk Symphonic Dances was released in the summer of 2018, with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ken-David Masur and was nominated for a Grammy Award 2020 in the category "Best Immersive Audio".
