Biography

The recording project was born from the collaboration between flutist Domenico Testaì and accordionist Maurizio Burzillà, Sicilian musicians from different backgrounds, but linked by a decade-long friendship and a great desire to experiment in new fields and try their hand in new spaces. In fact, the idea of the CD blossoms from a combination of various genres and timbres that are grafted onto existing stylistic features. Tango, tarantella, fugue, samba: the pieces have recognisable constructions but with basic structures changed and revised for an unusual formation, such as flute and accordion, certainly difficult to handle in terms of timbre, but fascinating and very stimulating. The seven original compositions by Burzillà are joined by the famous 'Luiza' by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The disc opens with the tripartite structure of 'Tango for Cinzia' (an initial melodic tango, a written improvisation and a highly rhythmic final coda). This is followed by "La Suite No. 1", a homage to composer Claude Bolling (originally written for flute, accordion, strings and percussion), the aforementioned "Luiza", the tarantella "Improprium" and "Allegretto fugato", a fugue in D minor, then repeated in E minor with a funky central part, ending with a milonga. Closing is "Badambò", a samba with an onomatopoeic title with an expository beginning, two written improvisations and a long coda that develops all the final themes.
