Synthetic Children is a Te Papaioea hardware electronic project. 2023's "Everything's Perpetual" is a 2-stepping soundtrack to being trans on the dark, wide streets of Palmerston North. Cuts of dubstep, post-jungle, techno, and footwork mix with unsettling queer sonics. The titular track opens with the signature anxious shuffle and distorted bassline, before "Body" brings a dysphoric and rigid consciousness to the album. This is a world of depressive dubstep and techno, clattering breakbeats over driving basslines, and layers of devotional synth. Closing track "dreams come thru" proposes something new for longtime listeners, revealing Synthetic Children at their most euphoric, playing in the world of weightless-grime and bubblegum-bass, alongside Impress. Lockdown in 2020 inspired Oneirism's recipe of mutated techno and coruscating FM synths. This is an emotionally dynamic journey exemplified by the extended version of Forgiven, where Bambin guides the listener through a bright, trancey dreamscape. Coinciding with the launch of local rave-den Tinyclub, came the Substrate EP, which ditched exploratory ambience for off-kilter rave. Hydroid Gabber is known for popping several speakers at shows across 2020. 2019's self titled debut, Synthetic Children, splays across dark ambient and techno. An unfurling of “glacial synths...obscured in clouds of gloom... martial, repetitive rhythms pervaded of sheer emotional depth and raw energy” (White Light/White Heat Magazine).
