Baltimore rapper YBS Skola proudly represents his city with club-friendly, motivational bangers. Born Dajuan Cannady, the son of prominent community leader Stokey Cannady, is part of the local YBS ("Young Ballers Shining") crew, which was founded by the late Lor Scoota. Skola grew up on the west side of the city in Edmondson Village and only pursued rap after encouragement by family and the YBS crew. Reflecting the character of his city, Skola painted gritty street scenes punctuated with optimistic messages of hope and social advancement. With his Baltimore-accented verses, he made his debut in early 2016 with No Pen Just Paper, which featured the single "Whole Lotta Money." As his exposure on the local scene grew, his momentum took a hit that summer when Lor Scoota was murdered after attending an anti-violence event. Weeks later, Skola's manager Trayvon "Truz" Lee was killed. With the death of Scoota, Skola became the main artist on the YBS roster. He re-released his debut as No Pen Just Paper Reloaded, adding additional Scoota verses in his memory. In early 2017, Skola issued his next mixtape, Only Hope, which featured DC rapper Shy Glizzy, Don Q, Nic Breed, Scoota, and production by Elijah808.
