Biography

ANDREW MACGREGOR, Shakuhachi Master, has played shakuhachi for more than 40 years with strong interest also in Aikido and Shiatsu. He first heard the sound of the shakuhachi on a recording by Leon Russell and was captivated by its ethereal sound. Andrew became passionately interested in the music handed down through the Zen Buddhist tradition. In 1993 Andrew travelled to Japan, spending an intensive study period in Osaka as Uchi Deshi with Tajima Tadashi. He recorded "Nesting of the Cranes", with Riley Lee in 1994 and "Music for Guitar & Shakuhachi - Album One" with classical guitarist Marion Schaap in 1998. "Four Shakuhachi Mediations" released in 1999 combines the power of Zen meditations with other instruments, voice and textures. "Ren-Men"(2001) is collaboration with award winning koto player Miho Yamaji from Japan. The CD “Mizuho” (2003) is with 21 string koto player Haruko Watanabe. Andrew MacGregor was selected to appear in the finals of the 2003 All-Japan National Music (Hõgaku) Competition (for Traditional instruments). Andrew has performed around Australia and Japan as well as USA, Hawaii, Malaysia and Netherlands. Andrew has lived in Penang, Malaysia since 2015. Andrew still teaches and performs if requested. He also records and publishes songs. Recent releases include Classical Shakuhachi, Zen Golden Memories, Sentimental Shakuhachi, plus the singles Tanah Pusaka (with Jia Wei Lee) and Wild Geese.
