Biography

With a voice that can be reminiscent of and capable of the acrobatics of Stevie Wonder, Tim Bowman, Jr. is contemporary gospel singer and songwriter. With a sound that borrows from pop, soul, alt-rock, and more, he followed an acclaimed 2012 debut album with the Billboard gospel chart-topping Listen in 2016. It won the Grammy for Best Gospel Album. After joining Mike and Dee Dee Freeman Ministries, Bowman released the collaborative Welcome to Faith City album in 2022. He took the lead on releases including 2023's "Nobody but God," which landed in the gospel Top 30. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, his father, Tim Bowman, is a Billboard-charting jazz/gospel musician, and his paternal aunt is popular gospel singer Vickie Winans. He grew up singing in church choirs, and as a teenager was featured on his aunt's single "How I Got Over," which reached number three on Billboard's Hot Gospel Songs chart. After graduating from Wayne State University in Detroit, he released his debut album, 2012's Beautiful, on Trippin 'N' Rhythm Records. Produced by his father and reflecting influences of pop, soul, R&B, and alternative rock, the album was well received, hitting the Top Ten of the Gospel Albums chart. "He Will," from the album, featured Vickie Winans and appeared on the gospel song chart. In 2014, he signed with Lifestyle Music Group, and the celebratory single "I'm Good" was released in early 2015. The following year saw Bowman release the acclaimed Listen, which not only topped the Billboard gospel chart but brought home a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album. In the meantime, the musician got married, and he his spouse were ordained as pastors at Mike and Dee Dee Freeman's Spirit of Faith Christian Center in the D.C. area in 2018. As one of the music and choir directors, he launched the worship album Welcome to Faith City from their membership in 2022. Among its soloists were Le'Andria Johnson, Maranda Curtis, and Kim Burrell. The rock-edged 2023 single "Nobody But God" featured Bowman on lead; it debuted at number 23 on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
