Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens Orgelwerken

Biography

A diversity of compositional genres were emitted from the pen of Jaak Lemmens. He composed orchestral works (symphonies), sacred vocal works (Te Deum, motets), and numerous organ pieces. Having been influenced by Bach (through his teacher Adolf Hesse who had studied with Forkel a former student of Bach's), Lemmens helped to introduce Bach to France, raise the musical standards of the Catholic church, and elevate the saddened art of organ construction in Belgium. Alphonse Mailly, Alexandre Guimant and C.M. Widor were his pupils who continued this important work. Lemmens was most known for his pedal technique and insightful organ registration. He had studied the piano at Brussels Conservatory, the organ with Girschner and composition with Fetis. By 1849 he was a professor of organ for the University. "Ecole d'orgue," Lemmens' studies for the organ, were used by several music conservatories. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
