Biography

Broken Spear is the recording project of Seb Choe. After a series of shoegaze, synth-pop, and drag projects in Seattle and New York, they donned the Broken Spear moniker to release “True” (Pedicure Records, 2017), a sample-heavy electronic album described by Seattle Weekly as a “hyper-aggressive music salad... stretched to the point of abstraction or made into a kind of overwhelming pointillism.” Truth Pieces (Business Casual, 2019) followed, a variety cassette of genre experiments, accompanied by videos with “myriad recording formats to match the equally complex selection of sonic processes and practices” (AQNB). They proceeded to release a trio of pop singles with Vera Mist (“Grayzone”, “Poolside”, “Spark”). Spear then shared Dragonflies with Sluurpee (Noumenal Loom, 2021), with remixes from PC Music’s Holly Waxwing and Sunspeaker, followed by Pantomime (Noumenal Loom, 2022) an EP whose five songs shuffled the Pacific Northwest guitars of their adolescence with a palette of cold synths, club rhythms and pop vocals. In 2024, they return with Ambient at Heart / Turnaround, two confessional piano pop singles that set aside guitars and guest vocalists in order to spotlight Spear’s own voice. The former uses minimal arrangement to deliver maximal lyrics, while the latter uses harmonic density to recontextualize a single word.
