Gutless is a punk/emo/indie rock group initially formed in Central Florida in early 2015. Though the name was previously just a moniker used by singer and guitarist Vi Viana during occasional solo shows, Gutless was quickly developed into a full band working to build a more dynamic sound. After self-releasing the 5-song EP “Some Voids…” and it’s Portuguese-translated version “Alguns Vazios…” in 2019, the band began tracking the follow-up full-length album, “Build and Burn,” later that year. Initial sessions were recorded at Goldentone Studio with previous engineer Rob McGregor (Against Me!, Hot Water Music, Fake Problems), though eventually interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic before being completed remotely by Viana, engineer Josie Lucido (Tooth Cemetery, geronimostilton), and a variety of guest performing musicians. “Build and Burn” is an album about a variety of ways in which a person can create something healing and personally-fulfilling, before watching it deteriorate, and then gradually finding the desire to pick up whatever remains to cultivate it again. The songs in it reflect on surviving substance abuse, sexual assault, cultural alienation, as well as the severing of toxic personal ties, the guilt from lamenting the loss of said ties, and learning to balance self-care with a personal healing craft.
