Biography

Jalil Shahnaz (22 May 1921 – 17 June 2013) was a Persian classical music musician and a virtuoso of the Persian musical instrument, Tar. He was born in an artist family in Isfahan. His father was one of the prominent artists of Isfahan music. Jalil entered the world of music by playing Tonbak and Setar. At the age of 14, he started learning Tar and at the age of 17, he was a skilled musician. The young Shahnaz settled in Tehran in 1948 and worked with Tehran Radio from the beginning of his arrival. The peak of Jalil Shahnaz's brilliance was in his collaboration with "Golha" music programs. While Shahnaz had great respect for the music of Iran's past and the playing style of the great masters, he never remained limited in these styles and in the shadow of his genius, he developed and evolved the playing of the past masters every day by creating new and sweet works. In addition to his mastery of Iranian music and comprehensive information about music and familiarity with most Iranian instruments and Iranian poetry and classical literature, he has collected this unique feature in his instrument. Tar playing of Shahnaz was a suitable combination of technique and enthusiasm. Jalil Shahnaz, in addition to playing the Tar, which was his special instrument, was also completely familiar with playing Setar, Violin, Santour, Ney and Tonbak. Shahnaz finally died in Tehran on 17 June 2013.
