Biography

Formed in 1979, Black Roots exploded onto the Reggae scene in 1981 when John Peel, legendary DJ on BBC Radio 1, showcased their debut EP, hailing them one of the best new reggae bands in the UK. They went on to release several albums in this period (Black Roots, The Frontline, In Session, All Day All Night, Natural Reaction, With Friends and others) and toured in the UK and Europe but it all went quiet for the band in the early 1990s. Their rebirth was engineered by Makasound who reissued some of their back catalogue as On the Frontline 2004 and In Session 2007, followed by 5 albums of original material On the Ground 2012 (Sugar Shack Records); Ghetto Feel 2014 and Son of Man 2016 (Soulbeats Records) , Take It 2018 (Khanti Records) and Nothing in the Larder 2021 (with Take It Easy Agency). The latest release 'Roots' is now out on their own label Nubian Records. They are performing live again delivering that conscious and uncompromising message with those harmonic vocals backed by a deep melodic roots reggae rhythm that makes them so unique. They have performed selected gigs like Cabaret Sauvage Paris, Garance Reggae Festival and Bagnols Reggae Festival Bagnols Sur Ceze, Banlieues Bleues Jazz Festival Paris, Reggae Sun Ska Bordeaux, Nomade Reggae Festival Frangy and Nancy Jazz Pulsations France; Dour Festival and Afro C in Belgium; Ostroda Reggae Festival Poland; Octopode Festival Geneva Switzerland; Sardinia Reggae Festival Italy and Rototom Reggae Sunsplash Spain.
