Small Machines

Biography

With a strikingly simple piano line and a sweet, theatrical vocal, you’d be forgiven for thinking Sydney-based Sarah Cherlin’s latest track, Small Machines is a love song. Written while pondering the integration of artificial intelligence into our daily lives, the song explores individual insignificance, anonymity and connection. Taking inspiration from Regina Spektor, Kate Miller-Heidke and Paul Dempsey, Sarah Cherlin’s sound is a remarkable merging of musical theatre, folk and pop.   Sarah has performed nationally in Melbourne, Sydney and on the Central Coast, as well as in Italy and France. Among her fondest performance memories is her 2015 trip to Nettuno, Italy where she joined Opera in Celle for their concert “Tango e Non Solo”. Dancers accompanied a multicultural programme set in the renaissance built Forte Sangallo in which Sarah performed Iranian folk song Jane Maryam in Farsi. Sarah can be found performing around Sydney’s music hub Newtown, where she has enjoyed sharing the stage with local acts Sister Ursuline, Royal Chant, Fingermae, Josh Shipton.  While working on an album with James Seymour, Sarah has plans to start 2021 with a music video for Phone Call and the release of a filmed solo-set for “Recovidry”, a nod to iconic music show “Recovery”.  She is currently in preparation to sing Casilda in Opera Lirica’s “The Gondoliers”, as well as taking part as a chorus member in their “Cavalleria Rusticana”, and Canberra based National Opera’s “La Rondine”.
