Skeleton Flower

Biography

Skeleton Flower was formed in 2019 by the two founding members of the Seattle, WA based multi-media performance company Degenerate Art Ensemble. The two principal artists in the group Haruko Crow Nishimura (vocalist & co-composer) and Joshua Kohl (guitarist & co-composer) have created music and performance together since meeting in their teens in music school. Since that time they have released 8 albums with collaborators (under the group name Degenerate Art Ensemble), created dozens of large scale performance works, toured internationally and collaborated with the likes of Kronos Quartet and theater director Robert Wilson. In 2019 they formed Skeleton Flower a 5 piece rock band with musicians Kevin Nortness (bass clarinet), Adam Kozie (drums) and Scott Teske (bass). Skeleton Flower’s “debut” album is a musical collection filled with gritty honesty, wild imagination, a generous sense of humor, and unleashed artistic expression. This collection of songs was inspired by a theatrical stage performance that is a semi-autobiographical exploration of a creative person’s struggle with identity, depression and the awakening of personal power. Here the songs take on a life of their own with the formation of this all new band Skeleton Flower. The work balances compelling supernatural narratives along with exploring how, through creativity, one can discover ways to not only survive adversity, but also share their imagination with others and transform themselves in the process.
