The best thing about Detroit is that we’ve got nothing left to prove. Birthed long before Eminem starred in the motion picture 8 Mile, our legacy was built by pioneers like Big Herk. The Motor City’s musical gift to the rest of the world, Herk is respected as one of the finest lyricists both locally and nationally. Flashback to ‘Living Da Life.’ A four-minute masterpiece that carried all the makings of a legendary felonious blockbuster in lyrical format. His flow? Relentless and foul with vocals soothing enough to pacify even the most villainous of souls. The grimy Detroit production? Merciless. While the innuendos of savagery were grim, navigating life on the streets of Woodrow Wilson was serious business and Herk had you truly convinced that the next victim might actually be you with lyrics like, “They say I’m heartless that might be true/No remorse, kill the dog, cat, the kids, and wifey too.” With the DNA of a king and the ‘Got’cha Back Entertainment’ empire still reigning, it is Young Herk who proves that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. With his new album “Just A Lil Sample Volume 1,” Detroit can feel a re-awakening upon us. Wearing the rap royalty crown bestowed upon him at birth, Young Herk, son of legendary rapper Big Herk, is next in line to carry the torch and keep the legacy alive. The standard has been set high and at the age of 25, he’s got big shoes to fill but if you ask him, “he’s aware of the pressures and he’s ready.”
