In the early 20th century, Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood, known as ‘Black Wall Street,’ was a thriving mecca of black business unlike anywhere else in the world. In 1921 white Tulsans backed by city leaders attacked Greenwood and burned 40 square blocks of Black Wall Street to the ground. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands lost their homes or businesses in one of the largest incidents of racial violence in American history. Fire in Little Africa brings together the top rappers, singers, musicians and visual artists in Oklahoma to commemorate the centennial of the 1921 Massacre and introduce Tulsa’s hip-hop culture to the world with an album, documentary, podcast and educational curriculum. The album will be released on the iconic Motown/Black Forum record label May 28, 2021.
