Biography

Previously one-half of late-'90s Irish quartet B*Witched, Barbarellas, aka twin sisters Keavy and Edele Lynch, returned after almost a decade in the wilderness with a sexier image and Lady Gaga-esque electro-pop sound a million miles away from their previous denim-clad tomboy and bubblegum teenybopper reputation. Born in Dublin in 1979, the pair grew up in a family, including brother Shane Lynch of Boyzone, that encouraged them to pursue their creative talents, and after teaching dance classes at their local academy at age 16, they recruited two friends to form girl group B*Witched. Mentored by producer Ray Hedges, they signed a deal with Glowworm Records in 1997, and just a year later topped the U.K. charts with their debut single, "C'est la Vie," which kick-started a hugely successful two-year period that saw them become the first ever act to debut at number one with their first four singles, and score two Top Five albums, a Billboard Top Ten hit, and support slots with *NSYNC and Britney Spears. After the band officially split in 2002, Edele worked with the Xenomania production team, penning tracks for Girls Aloud ("Some Kind of Miracle") and Sugababes ("Situation's Heavy"), while Keavy set up her own songwriting/production studio, Ziiiing! In 2006, they teamed up to perform on various university and nightclub tours under the name Ms. Lynch and spent the next four years honing a new, more mature direction, the result of which was Barbarellas. Managed by former Sony chairman Paul Burger, the sisters showcased their new project for the first time at the 2010 Miss Ireland ceremony, worked on their debut album with producer Yoad Nevo (Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran), and, following a support slot on Boyzone's U.K. tour, released their debut album, Night Mode, in 2011. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
